Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani has approved the allocation of serviced residential plots for members of the Union of Writers and Authors of Iraq, covering all branches of the Union across the country.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sudani received the newly elected president and members of the Union’s council, congratulating them on their victory in the recent elections and expressing appreciation for the efforts of the outgoing council in promoting literature and culture.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to meeting citizens’ needs and continuing the implementation of the core principles of the government program, particularly in addressing unemployment, combating corruption, alleviating poverty, and improving public services.

Al-Sudani emphasized the significant role played by writers and intellectuals in defending Iraq’s sovereignty and unity through balanced and rational discourse to confront the various challenges facing the country and the region.

The statement added that, in recognition of their contributions, the Prime Minister approved several initiatives, including the launch of the ‘Creators’ Channel’ for postgraduate studies, the allocation of 10 scholarships for literary and critical studies abroad within the Higher Education Initiative, and the declaration of 2026 as a special year to commemorate the centenary of the birth of pioneering Iraqi poets Badr Shakir Al-Sayyab, Abdul Wahab Al-Bayati, and Buland Al-Haidari. He also approved support for hosting the upcoming Arab Writers’ Union meeting in Baghdad.

The Union’s members expressed their gratitude to Al-Sudani for the government’s continued support for cultural affairs and the Union’s work over the past two years, contributing to the production of literary achievements befitting Iraq’s rich civilizational and cultural legacy.
