Baghdad: The leader of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, has highlighted two significant phenomena that pose a threat to Iraq’s constitutional democratic system. In a recent tweet on the X platform, Al-Maliki addressed the growing concerns surrounding these issues.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Maliki identified the first phenomenon as the signs of a political crisis that are becoming increasingly evident. He also pointed out the second phenomenon, which involves the targeting of free media based on particular interests, occurring amidst what he described as the “terrifying silence” of Iraq’s legislative, executive, and judiciary branches.

Al-Maliki elaborated that the attempt to confine the media to a specific niche, preventing it from tackling fundamental issues pertinent to the Iraqi people, is problematic. He emphasized that the media should not be perceived merely as a tool for entertainment or image enhancement. Instead, he called on security services to avoid actions that would curb freedom of expression, highlighting that the media is a crucial element of the constitution and democratic life. Al-Maliki urged media outlets to avoid tarnishing and targeting national institutions.

In his concluding remarks, Al-Maliki warned against policies aimed at silencing dissenting voices and holding media professionals accountable for their words, criticism, or comments. He cautioned that such actions could potentially exacerbate existing crises and threaten societal peace in Iraq.
