Babylon: A researcher at the University of Babylon has successfully cultivated a rare type of high-quality cauliflower. Researcher Samira Shawkat Hamoud, affiliated with the University of Babylon's Department of Scholarships and Relations, has succeeded in cultivating Romanesco cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. Romanesco). This type of cauliflower, part of the cruciferous family, is not widely cultivated in Iraq. Hamoud's work involved determining the best combination of biofertilizers and organic extracts to enhance both productivity and nutritional quality.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Dr. Noman Al-Khazraji, Director of Media at the University of Babylon, commented on the achievement. He noted that the research was part of a master's thesis discussed in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Engineering at Al-Qasim Green University. The thesis, which earned an "Excellent" grade, was titled "Improving the growth and yield of Romanesco cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. Romanesco) using biofertilizer and organic extracts, relying on environmentally friendly fertilizers."
Dr. Al-Khazraji further elaborated that the study involved thorough research to determine the optimal combination of biofertilizers. This included using two types of bacteria, Azotobacter and Bacillus sp., along with imported and local organic extracts. The research successfully achieved the highest productivity, quality characteristics, and nutrient content for this unique plant.
