New york: The International Conference on the Peaceful Resolution of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution commenced at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The conference sees the participation of numerous ministers and international representatives and is co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France. Notably, the United States and Israel have chosen to boycott the event.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the conference’s primary objective is to establish clear benchmarks for creating an independent Palestinian state. This initiative is set against the backdrop of ongoing regional tensions and a long-standing political deadlock.

Initially, the UN General Assembly, composed of 193 member states, had slated the conference for June 2025 following a decision in September 2024. However, the timeline was adjusted due to an Israeli attack on Iran earlier this year, resulting in the event’s postponement.

Opening statements at the conference urged the international community to shift from mere verbal condemnations to taking tangible actions in support of the Palestinian Authority. The focus is on providing both political and financial backing to promote institutional reform and enhance governance structures, aiming for long-term security and stability.

In a related development, French President Emmanuel Macron announced last week his country’s intention to formally recognize the State of Palestine during the UN General Assembly’s annual session in September. This move is regarded as both politically and symbolically significant.
