Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has affirmed the continuation of the “Baghdad is More Beautiful” initiative, alongside plans from various ministries and the Baghdad Municipality, aimed at a comprehensive and integrated rehabilitation of the capital.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sudani recently initiated the Al-Kray’at Bridge project on the Tigris River, marking the first major development under the campaign to revitalize the holy city of Kadhimiya. This project targets the “Fifth Division” area, aiming to repurpose a long-closed military zone into a vibrant area hosting service facilities, cultural and religious centers, and rest areas for visitors.

Al-Sudani commended the collaborative efforts of the executive team, which includes ministers, the Director of the Prime Minister’s Office, and officials from the Ministry of Housing, the Baghdad Municipality, the Investment Commission, the Kadhimiya Shrine, and the Hanafi Shrine. He highlighted the tangible progress achieved through the government’s strategic planning, which is tailored to the unique needs of each district and city.

The Prime Minister has also declared the Fifth Branch area, spanning 400 dunams, as an investment opportunity for companies, ensuring transparency and clarity in its announcement. This area will feature a 12,500-square-meter museum commemorating past atrocities, serving as a reminder and deterrent against repeating such dark eras.

Al-Sudani noted the urgent need for rehabilitation in Baghdad, home to over 9.5 million residents, and criticized the lack of suitable projects addressing the city’s capacity and identity. He emphasized that Kadhimiya is now witnessing a significant transformation, aligning with its Islamic heritage and accommodating the influx of visitors and traffic.

The Prime Minister reiterated the commitment to high-quality, rapid implementation of projects under the “Baghdad More Beautiful 1 and 2” initiatives. These include the Al-Kray’at Bridge, part of efforts to alleviate traffic congestion, and new infrastructure connecting to major expressways.

The ongoing campaign in Kadhimiya encompasses extensive urban development, including the rehabilitation of streets, schools, and neighborhoods, the construction of recreational areas, and the relocation of governmental offices. This comprehensive plan aims to enhance the overall infrastructure and livability of Baghdad, ensuring a brighter future for its citizens.
