Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani emphasized the government’s commitment to revitalizing the healthcare sector, aiming to reduce the outflow of resources and the need for citizens to seek medical treatment abroad.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sudani made these remarks during the commencement of construction at the Italian Hospital in Baghdad, situated in the former Turkish Restaurant building. He highlighted the laying of the foundation stone for the 103-bed hospital as a major step forward, marking the arrival of a leading Italian healthcare institution in Iraq.
Al-Sudani noted that the Italian institution’s presence represents a significant enhancement to Iraq’s healthcare landscape. The strategic location of the Turkish Restaurant building, he remarked, should be transformed into an architectural and healthcare landmark.
In addition to the Italian Hospital project, Al-Sudani announced the initiation of work on sixteen 100-bed hospital projects across various districts. The
se endeavors will involve collaboration with experienced international medical service providers, aiming to curb the depletion of resources and reduce the necessity for citizens to travel abroad for medical care.
The Prime Minister also addressed the government’s efforts to improve pharmaceutical security by supporting domestic manufacturers. He reported that coverage for local pharmaceutical products has increased to 40% from a previous 10%. This support is part of a broader strategy to lower the state’s expenditure on medical supplies.
Al-Sudani stressed the importance of enhancing the investment environment, overcoming bureaucratic hurdles, and saving time. He mentioned that the Council of Ministers is working towards empowering major investment institutions by granting necessary permissions.
The statement from Al-Sudani’s media office also mentioned his welcome to guests, including the Vice President of the Italian Senate and the European Union representative. He acknowledged the collaborative efforts
of the Ministry of Health, the Baghdad Municipality, the National Investment Commission, and other entities in launching this advanced medical facility. The project is part of the “Baghdad is More Beautiful” campaign, focusing on revitalizing abandoned buildings with modern hospital operations and management.
Al-Sudani commended the contributions of the GKST Group’s Chairman, whose organization operates 165 health centers globally. He highlighted the group’s successful model implemented at Najaf Ashraf Hospital, which will be replicated in Basra, as a valuable addition to Iraq’s health sector.
