Moscow: The Iraqi National Security Service (INSS) announced today the arrest of Ajaj Ahmed Hardan, known as ‘Hajjaj of Nukhayr al-Salman’, one of the most wanted figures from the former regime, following an extensive intelligence operation that lasted over six months.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, INSS units in Al-Muthanna Governorate, in coordination with South Salah al-Din Security, successfully apprehended the fugitive, who previously served as the security officer of the notorious Nukhayr al-Salman prison. The suspect held several key security positions across Al-Muthanna, including in the districts of Rumaitha, Najmi, Hilal, Busiya, and ultimately Nukhayr al-Salman.

The statement added that the detainee was involved in numerous crimes against humanity during the era of dictatorship, including torture, murder, and rape of hundreds of Iraqi citizens, particularly members of the Kurdish ethnic group forcibly exiled to Al-Muthanna. He also took part in executions and the burial of victims in mass graves in the area.

The INSS noted that in an attempt to mislead authorities, the suspect’s relatives had claimed he was deceased. However, intensive intelligence work, analysis of available data, and cross-referencing with prior confessions led to the discovery of his whereabouts in Salah al-Din Governorate.

Following the completion of legal procedures and the collection of statements from victims and plaintiffs, the arrest operation was carried out, and the suspect was referred to the competent investigative authorities to complete the legal process.

The National Security Service reaffirmed that justice will continue to pursue those whose hands are stained with the blood of innocent people, and that time offers no refuge for those evading rightful punishment.
