Washington: South Korean and US foreign ministers have reaffirmed their “firm commitment” to the complete denuclearization of North Korea and the full implementation of sanctions imposed on the nation. This commitment was reiterated during recent talks held in Washington, marking the first meeting between South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun-hee and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio since the new South Korean administration took office.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the discussions between Cho and Rubio occurred against a backdrop of significant diplomatic activity, including preparations for a forthcoming summit between South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and US President Donald Trump. The meeting took place shortly after President Trump announced a new trade agreement with South Korea, with plans for a summit at the White House within two weeks.

State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce emphasized the unified stance of the two ministers, noting that they both reiterated their commitment to the full implementation of international sanctions on North Korea. This meeting and the reaffirmation of their shared objectives come in response to recent statements by Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, who dismissed the possibility of talks regarding denuclearization, despite acknowledging the “not bad” personal relationship between Trump and Kim.
