Baghdad: The Parliamentary Electricity and Energy Committee confirmed today a complete power outage in Iraq due to a fault in the transmission lines. Committee Chairman MP Mohammed Nouri al-Abd Rabbah announced in a press statement that the Basra and Maysan power plants have collapsed and shut down as a result of increased loads. Efforts are underway to gradually restore these plants to service.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, local sources have reported a technical failure at the Hamidhiya power plant in Anbar Governorate. This failure has affected power plants in the southern and central Euphrates governorates, including the capital, Baghdad.

Local sources further indicated that, as of Monday afternoon, the electricity system in most Iraqi governorates had collapsed, leading to a complete shutdown of power plants. The facilities affected by the shutdown include the Samarra thermal power plant, the Bismayah thermal power plant, the Kirkuk thermal power plant, the Basra thermal power plant, the Taza thermal power plant, and the Zubaydiya thermal power plant.

The outage is attributed to high temperatures that have caused increased loads on the power grid, compounding the existing technical failures.
