Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has expressed Turkey’s willingness to “assume the responsibility of being an actual guarantor if the two-state solution is achieved” in the Palestinian territories.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Fidan outlined Turkey’s role as a mediator in Palestine during a television interview with the Turkish channel “Ulke.” He emphasized that Turkey is prepared to fulfill its obligations if an agreement acceptable to the Palestinians is reached. He stated, “This is very important. No country can assume this obligation. It is sufficient for the Palestinians to be granted a state within the 1967 borders.”
The Turkish minister highlighted that complete trust in Israel is “unrealistic,” stressing the need for the international community to impose a real pressure mechanism on Israel to ensure it meets its responsibilities. Fidan pointed out the importance of developing effective international pressure mechanisms and transforming them into concrete measures.
Fidan furt
her elaborated on Turkey’s mediator role, clarifying, “The role Turkey has played so far is that of mediator. It was to stop the war.” He expressed Turkey’s close connection to the Palestinian cause and its belief in and support for finding a solution through this relationship. He compared this to the relationship the United States has with Israel.
Regarding operational matters during the ceasefire in Gaza, Fidan mentioned the formation of the “Early Task Force” to address issues such as the exchange of hostages and bodies. He denied the existence of an approved structural force with specific tasks and rules of engagement.
The Turkish Foreign Minister also referenced US President Donald Trump’s peace plan, which includes concepts for institutional mechanisms such as a task force, a peace council, and a stabilization force. Discussions regarding the details of these mechanisms are ongoing.
