Baghdad: The European Union reiterated its commitment to continue supporting Iraq in diversifying its national economy and implementing projects to confront climate change.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, EU Ambassador to Iraq Clemens Semmert stated that the EU had issued a statement congratulating the Iraqi people on conducting the electoral process peacefully. He emphasized that Iraq remains a sovereign state, and the EU does not interfere in the formation of its government. However, he acknowledged Iraq’s need for comprehensive economic development and noted that Europe is prepared to continue its support in this endeavor.

Semmert highlighted the EU’s ongoing support for Iraq, aiming to help the country become a model of stability in a conflict-ridden region. He commended the Iraqi government for maintaining regional stability and strengthening its position as a pillar of peace.

Addressing the EU-supported projects in Iraq, the ambassador pointed out that Iraq is among the five most affected countries globally by climate change, with its impacts already causing some residents to relocate. This urgency underscores the priority of environmental action, placing Iraq high on the EU’s agenda for assistance.

Semmert outlined the EU’s support strategies, which include enhancing Iraq’s environmental legislative framework, diversifying its economy away from hydrocarbons toward renewable energies, and bolstering the private sector to expand export opportunities beyond oil. He concluded by affirming that supporting the Iraqi people remains a steadfast priority for Europe.
