Brussels: The European Union has expressed commendation for the initiatives undertaken by Iraq’s Ministry of Interior aimed at bolstering regional security and addressing cross-border criminal activities. The EU also reiterated its intent to broaden its collaborative efforts and partnership with Iraq in the forthcoming period.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, a statement from the Ministry of Interior revealed that Interior Minister Abdul Amir Al-Shammari engaged in discussions with Susan Rapp, the Director-General of the European Union’s International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD). This meeting took place alongside the second international conference of the Global Alliance to Combat Migrant Smuggling in Brussels.

The discussion between Minister Al-Shammari and Director-General Rapp focused on enhancing joint cooperation in migration policies, strategies to counter migrant smuggling and human trafficking networks, and sharing information and technical expertise. These efforts are aimed at strengthening the institutional capacities of the authorities involved.

The statement highlighted that Minister Al-Shammari underscored Iraq’s dedication to implementing modern national policies that comply with international standards. These policies are particularly focused on safeguarding vulnerable populations from exploitation and dismantling cross-border criminal networks targeting citizens in the region.

Director-General Rapp acknowledged the notable advancements made by Iraq in the fight against migrant smuggling and recognized the Ministry of Interior’s measures to improve regional security and limit transnational crimes. She reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to enhancing cooperation and partnership with Iraq in the coming phase.
