Iraq Renews Its Commitment To Guaranteeing, Promoting, And Defending Human Rights

Baghdad: Iraq has renewed its commitment to guaranteeing human rights, strengthening their protection, and defending them, underscoring the importance of international solidarity in confronting grave human rights violations across the world.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, in a statement marking the International Human Rights Day, the Prime Minister’s Media Office said that the occasion represents an opportunity to reaffirm shared human values and to renew Iraq’s commitment to safeguarding human rights and upholding human dignity.

The statement noted that this commemoration coincides with the anniversary of Victory Day over the ISIS terrorist gangs and the end of their control over a number of Iraqi cities, achieved through the unity of the Iraqi people and the efforts of the armed forces in all their formations.

It explained that, over the past years, the Iraqi government has taken significant steps to enhance and protect human rights in various fields, including the successful organization of elections to choose members of the Council of Representatives and provincial councils, improving prison conditions, expanding social protection programs, supporting and compensating survivors of terrorism from all components of society, in addition to strengthening cooperation with the United Nations and civil society organizations.

The statement added that the government’s humanitarian role has extended beyond Iraq’s borders through the provision of urgent assistance to brethren affected by the criminal war waged by occupying forces on the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, as well as receiving displaced persons from these areas inside Iraq and providing them with material and health support, reaffirming Iraq’s steadfast position in supporting just causes.

The statement concluded by stressing that the International Human Rights Day represents a message to embody the principles of human rights on the ground, strengthen the spirit of citizenship, and protect human dignity.
