Baghdad: The Head of the Border Ports Authority, Omar Adnan Al-Waeli, welcomed a United Nations International Trade Center (ITC) delegation, led by Pierre Ponthieux, to discuss advancements at Iraq's border crossings. The delegation, arriving from Switzerland, included key figures from the Trade and Investment Facilitation Division, Trade Facilitation and Digital Transformation Programs, and a Trade Policy Adviser. The meeting focused on enhancing international trade cooperation and facilitating smoother cross-border transactions.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Waeli detailed the significant strides made by the Authority in boosting non-oil revenues and combating smuggling through a comprehensive digital transformation initiative. The initiative incorporates modern technologies, such as enhanced data exchange and integrated sonar systems, and supports the TIR system for cross-border trade, reinforcing the Authority's commitment to security and trade facilitation.

Al-Waeli highlighted the positive impact of these efforts on trade volumes and international trade facilitation in Iraq. The UN delegation commended the Authority's governance and electronic monitoring measures, acknowledging its role in reducing smuggling and improving border port operations. They also reiterated ITC's commitment to providing necessary technical and training support to further develop the Authority's capabilities.

The visit underscores the International Trade Centre's dedication to fostering collaboration with Iraq's Border Ports Authority, aiming to boost operational efficiency and contribute to economic stability and development.
