Basra: Security forces arrested 17 people in connection with the harassment incident that occurred on the Basra Corniche on New Year’s Eve. The head of the Basra Higher Security Committee, Governor Asaad Al-Eidani, stated in a press release that security forces acted immediately upon the incident and, after investigation, were able to identify and arrest those involved. He emphasized that legal measures would be taken against them in accordance with the law.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Governor added that the local government will not tolerate any behavior that violates public decency or disrupts community security, stressing the importance of maintaining the safety of citizens, especially in public places that witness large gatherings during events. The Governor of Basra indicated that security forces have intensified their deployment in recreational areas and gathering places to ensure the safety of families and visitors and prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

The video showed a large group of young men surrounding the girl and attempting to harass her, a scene that sparked widespread anger and condemnation among social media users, who called on security authorities to take action. Immediate action must be taken to protect the victims and hold those involved accountable under the law.
