Erbil: The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has articulated its approach to selecting a candidate for Iraq’s presidency, emphasizing the importance of consensus as the cornerstone of its strategy. This announcement comes amid ongoing discussions about the political landscape following the parliamentary elections.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, MP Ikhlas al-Dulaimi outlined the KDP’s position, indicating that the party is prepared to engage in fulfilling electoral obligations once the newly elected parliament commences its duties. Al-Dulaimi emphasized that the decision-making process will be guided by mutual agreement among all political entities.

Al-Dulaimi further explained that there is currently no veto against any individual candidate. The KDP does not object to any presidential hopeful as long as the selection process is underpinned by consensus and agreement among all involved parties and components. She noted that although the names of potential candidates have not yet been proposed, the party maintains that the presidency should be allocated to the Kurdish majority through a consensual approach, with the agreement of all Kurdish factions being a fundamental condition.

The KDP convened a regular meeting at the Pirmam resort in Erbil, presided over by Masoud Barzani, with the attendance of his deputies, Nechirvan Barzani and Masrour Barzani. The meeting focused on the issue of presidential candidates and other related topics, culminating in the decision to establish a negotiating delegation tasked with securing the presidency for the KDP’s candidate.
