Baghdad: The National Seismological Service of Mexico announced that it has recorded 936 aftershocks following the 6.5 magnitude earthquake that struck the country last night.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, a statement published by the service on the X platform read: “936 aftershocks have been recorded for the 6.5 magnitude earthquake.”

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada had previously reported that 12 people were injured in the Mexican capital as a result of the earthquake.

The National Seismological Service reported that a 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck the southern state of Guerrero, and its effects were also felt in the states of Morelos, Jalisco, Oaxaca, Tabasco, and Colima.

Mexico is considered one of the most earthquake-prone countries, as it lies at the intersection of colliding tectonic plates. Over the past forty years, the country has experienced at least seven earthquakes of magnitude 7 or greater, collectively causing the deaths of approximately 10,000 people, most of whom perished in the devastating magnitude 8 earthquake of 1985.
