Turkey Affirms Unity and Integration as Syria’s Path Forward

Baghdad: Turkey has expressed hope that it has now become clear that Syria’s future lies in unity and integration, not in terrorism and division.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, in a statement regarding the ceasefire and full integration agreement announced by Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said it hopes the deal will help accelerate efforts to establish security and stability in the country based on Syria’s unity and territorial integrity.

The ministry added that Turkey hopes the agreement will contribute to enhancing the safety and security of the Syrian people, as well as stability across the region, particularly in neighboring countries.

The statement noted that the new phase which began in Syria on December 8, 2024, represents an exceptional opportunity for the country to build a prosperous future, stressing that Syria is currently going through a critical and decisive stage.

It emphasized the need for all parties in Syria to fully realize that the country’s future does not lie in terrorism and division, but in unity, solidarity and national integration.

Turkey reaffirmed its continued support for the Syrian government’s efforts to combat terrorism and implement reconstruction initiatives based on a comprehensive and unified approach reflecting the will of the Syrian people.

On Saturday night, President Ahmed Al-Sharaa announced the signing of a ceasefire agreement and the full integration of YPG forces into Syrian state institutions.

Under the agreement, all civilian institutions will be merged into state bodies, while YPG fighters will be individually integrated into the Syrian Ministry of Defense rather than as independent military formations. Border crossings and oil and gas fields will also come under Damascus’ control.

The 14-point agreement also includes the immediate administrative and military handover of Deir Ezzor and Raqqa provinces to the Syrian government.

Prior to the announcement, the Syrian army launched two military operations from Tal Abyad towards YPG positions in the countryside of Raqqa and Hasakah, before the Defense Ministry declared a ceasefire in line with the agreement.

Meanwhile, local residents and tribal forces took control of dozens of towns and villages east of the Euphrates, coinciding with the army’s full control over western Euphrates areas, including Deir Hafer, Maskanah, Tabqa and the strategic Euphrates Dam, as well as several oil and gas fields.

It is worth noting that YPG previously withdrew from implementing a March 2025 agreement with the Syrian government, which stipulated the integration of civilian and military institutions, respect for Kurdish rights, reopening crossings and airports, and affirming Syria’s territorial unity.

The Syrian government continues intensive efforts to restore security and extend its authority across the entire country since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime on December 8, 2024.
