Washington: The United States has officially announced its withdrawal from the World Health Organization, a move that has sparked widespread international reactions, amid warnings of its repercussions on global health coordination efforts and the fight against epidemics.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, in an official statement, the US administration said the decision to withdraw stemmed from what it described as “structural and administrative failures” within the organization and its failure to respond to reforms demanded by Washington. The statement affirmed that the United States will redirect its resources to directly support alternative health initiatives.
It added that the decision has taken effect according to established legal frameworks, while emphasizing that the United States will continue to support health and humanitarian programs through bilateral and multilateral channels outside the framework of the World Health Organization.
For its part, the World Health Organization expressed regret over the decision, stressing that international cooperation remains crucial to protecting global health security, particularly in the face of cross-border challenges such as pandemics and infectious diseases.
The US withdrawal has raised concerns about its impact on the organization’s funding and programs, while several countries have called for containing the repercussions of the decision and maintaining international coordination in the health sector.
