Baghdad: Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein revealed on Sunday that there is no unified candidate from the two Kurdish parties for the upcoming parliamentary session scheduled for next Tuesday to elect the President of the Republic. The total number of presidential candidates has reached 19.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Hussein stated that the Kurdistan Democratic Party has nominated its own candidate, alongside other candidates representing different political parties, all of whom will compete for the position. Despite the high number of candidates, a consensus on a single nominee has yet to be achieved.
In addition to the presidential election updates, Foreign Minister Hussein addressed matters concerning the Syrian border file and regional developments. He affirmed ongoing coordination and continuous communication with the Syrian government. Hussein highlighted Iraq’s strategic security plans, which are aimed at tightening control over the Iraqi-Syrian border.
Furthermore, he mentioned that the Minister of Defense and other security leaders are set to brief the Council of Representatives during Sunday’s session. They will provide updates on the latest developments and the measures implemented by security forces to secure the borders with both Iran and Syria.
