Baghdad: The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) parliamentary bloc has disclosed new information surrounding the delay of the presidential election session that was initially planned for Tuesday.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the head of the KDP bloc, MP Shakhwan Abdullah, explained on Wednesday that the election session was scheduled to proceed in alignment with constitutional timelines. However, an official request from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc led to the Speaker of Parliament postponing the session until the following week.
Abdullah elaborated that subsequent meetings resulted in a proposal for the KDP bloc to submit a similar request, aiming to present a unified Kurdish stance and demonstrate mutual agreement on the delay. He asserted that the KDP remains committed to constitutional timelines and is prepared to adhere to the legislative and legal frameworks. Abdullah confirmed the KDP’s readiness to attend any newly scheduled session to elect the president.
Discussing the prospects for the KDP’s presidential candidate, Abdullah highlighted that Fuad Hussein has garnered widespread support within the Council of Representatives and across multiple political blocs. He pointed out that Hussein’s successful tenure as the Minister of Foreign Affairs for two terms positions him as the frontrunner for the presidency.
The Council of Representatives made the decision to postpone its presidential election session on Tuesday after receiving formal requests from both the Patriotic Union and Democratic Party blocs.
