Babylon: At the University of Babylon, a medical team is deciphering the link between e-cigarettes and mood disorders.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the College of Medicine at Hammurabi University in Babylon has made a significant research accomplishment. A research team led by Dr. Ali Abbas Al-Moussawi, a faculty member at the college, successfully published an advanced medical study in a prestigious international journal listed in Scopus (first quarter Q1).
Al-Moussawi revealed that the study, titled “Oral Streptococcus and Vitamin B12 Deficiency in E-Cigarette Users: A Microbial-Nutritional-Neuro-Axis Associated with Mood Disorders,” was published in The Karbala International Journal of Modern Science. The research addresses a contemporary health issue by exploring a complex biological pathway that links changes in the oral microbiome to vitamin B12 deficiency, resulting in neurotransmitter imbalances and psychological and mood-related symptoms in e-cigarette users.
He further explained that
the study was a product of both international and local research collaboration, boasting a scientific acceptance rate of less than 15%. This low acceptance rate underscores the accuracy and high methodological standards of the research findings.
Al-Moussawi emphasized that this achievement enhances the University of Babylon’s global standing, highlighting the college’s commitment to addressing societal health issues from a modern, applied scientific perspective.
