Iraqi Journalists Syndicate Elections See Khalid Jasim Elected President Amid Judicial Oversight


Baghdad: Iraqi newspapers on Sunday prominently highlighted the elections of the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate, which concluded with the election of journalist Khalid Jasim as President of the Syndicate. Moayad Al-Lami and Jabbar Tarrad were elected as Vice Presidents.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Zawraa newspaper, associated with the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate, detailed that the elections, which took place last Friday, saw significant participation and were conducted under direct judicial oversight. The process was witnessed by Arab and international media delegations, ensuring transparency and adherence to legal protocols. Khalid Jasim emerged victorious as President, with Moayad Al-Lami and Jabbar Tarrad securing positions as Vice Presidents.

In his address during the electoral conference, Moayad Al-Lami emphasized the importance of the elections occurring amid growing regional and international challenges. He highlighted the Syndicate’s achievements, including distributing over 20,000 hous
ing units to journalists across Iraq, and reaffirmed the Syndicate’s commitment to addressing the needs of journalists.

The legal committee overseeing the elections announced the commencement of the 23rd General Conference of the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate. The elections were held at the Syndicate’s headquarters, with participation from practicing members, to elect key positions such as the president, vice presidents, and members of various committees. The judicial authority confirmed that voting concluded at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by a supervised counting process to ensure fair results.

The event was attended by notable international figures, including Anthony Bellanger, Secretary-General of the International Federation of Journalists; Jim Boumelha, IFJ Executive Committee member; Khaled Miri, Secretary-General of the Federation of Arab Journalists; and other prominent journalists from the region.

Meanwhile, Al-Zaman newspaper reported on the electoral outcomes, noting that Khalid Jasim secured th
e presidency with 1,206 votes, surpassing his competitor Mohammed Hanoon. Moayad Al-Lami and Jabbar Tarrad were confirmed as Vice Presidents following the judicially supervised vote.

Prime Minister of the caretaker government, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, extended his congratulations to the newly elected leaders of the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate. In a statement, he expressed hopes for the success of the journalistic community in Iraq, emphasizing the importance of journalistic integrity and its role in supporting democratic life.

The election results were well-received across Iraqi journalistic, cultural, and political circles, with many extending their congratulations to the newly elected syndicate leadership.

In parallel developments, Al-Sabah newspaper reported on an upcoming parliamentary session scheduled for Monday, where the focus will be on voting on permanent parliamentary committees and addressing priority issues. This comes after a period of disruption due to the lack of a legal quorum, which had d
elayed legislative processes.

The session’s agenda includes the oath-taking of newly sworn-in members of parliament and voting on parliamentary committees. Additionally, there are calls for hosting discussions with the Media and Communications Commission to address regulatory concerns over social media and fake news.

MPs are also advocating for legislative amendments, including changes to the Mukhtars Law, to promote social stability and security throughout Iraq. MP Hadiya Al-Khaykani emphasized the importance of these amendments in ensuring justice and supporting the Mukhtars’ role in the community.
