PM Affirms Political Support for Economic Reforms in Iraq

Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani affirmed that the approach to key economic reforms aimed at supporting the national economy in the near term enjoys the backing of national political forces. In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Media Office said that Al-Sudani chaired a meeting of the Ministerial Council for the Economy, attended by high-ranking officials including the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Finance, and other key ministers and advisers.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting reviewed agenda items and followed up on government efforts to increase revenues and rationalize expenditures, as well as to review previous decisions. The council approved the organizational structure of the Revenue Collection Directorate at the Ministry of Finance, which had been previously endorsed in an earlier meeting.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of selecting qualified personnel to staff the new directorate to achieve its intended objectives. Additionally, the council approved exempting security agencies and emergency medical services from a previously adopted decision to reduce fuel subsidies, considering the nature of their vital duties and to ensure the continuity of their operations.

Al-Sudani emphasized the need to assess the financial and economic impact of every measure taken in this context, noting that the government’s core economic reform agenda continues to receive broad political support.
