Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held telephone talks with UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres, during which they discussed a number of regional issues.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, sources in the Turkish Foreign Ministry stated that the two sides discussed the latest developments in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, in addition to the ongoing talks between the United States and Iran, and the latest developments in the Cyprus issue.
The Omani capital, Muscat, hosted a round of indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran last Friday, amidst a US military buildup in the region against Tehran. These negotiations have been tense, with uranium enrichment as a major point of contention. Iran is demanding the lifting of sanctions in exchange for its commitment to restrict its nuclear program, which would prevent the production of a nuclear bomb.
In contrast, the United States demands that Iran completely halt its uranium enrichment activities and transfer its highly enriched uranium out of the country. The US administration has also sought to bring Iran’s missile program and its support for armed groups in the region to the negotiating table, but Iran has repeatedly affirmed that it will not negotiate on any issues other than its nuclear program.
