Baghdad: The Spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Sabah al-Nu’man, confirmed today that the transfer of ISIS members to Iraqi prisons has been completed without any issues.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Iraqi government has successfully transferred 4,500 ISIS members from Syria to Iraq, following a strategic decision designed to prevent potential security threats.
Al-Nu’man emphasized that the decision to move these individuals was made to prevent escapes from Syrian prisons and to mitigate threats to regional security. He stated that the process involved precise calculations and careful procedures to ensure the safe transfer and incarceration of the individuals in Iraqi facilities.
During a security briefing, Al-Nu’man highlighted the importance of informing the public about the decision’s circumstances. This transparency aimed to counteract any misinformation that could intimidate the Iraqi population or rekindle fears similar to those experienced in 2014. He noted that the Iraqi society’s awareness has played a key role in the decision’s acceptance.
The operation was conducted in collaboration with the international coalition, ensuring that the transferred individuals are held under strict security measures within Iraqi prisons. These facilities are operated by the Ministry of Justice and are subject to stringent security protocols, with no reported breaches or disorders.
The spokesperson also addressed the responsibility of foreign governments to repatriate their citizens who are among the detained terrorists. Despite calls from the Iraqi government and the United Nations for international cooperation, the response from other countries has been limited. Al-Nu’man expressed hope that more nations will act to resolve this issue, which continues to impact both Iraq and Syria due to the presence of terrorists’ families in the region. He urged all countries to fulfill their legal and security obligations in this matter.
