Iraq Completes Transfer Plans for Syrian Prisoners with Support from International Coalition

Baghdad: Iraq’s Justice Minister, Khalid Shawani, has announced the finalization of plans to transfer terrorist prisoners from Syria to Iraq, with the costs being covered by the international coalition. Shawani revealed the detailed timeline and procedures during a session with the Council of Representatives.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Shawani informed the Council about the comprehensive preparations, including security, military, and administrative measures, to facilitate the transfer. He outlined the security protocols in place for the prisoners, emphasizing the strict surveillance and high security at the designated prison. A specialized judicial body is set to handle the cases, supported by a technical team from the Ministry of Interior for preliminary investigations.

Shawani noted that the international coalition will cover all expenses related to the transfer, including security enhancements and infrastructure rehabilitation of the prison. Among the prisoners, the majority are Syrian, with 165 Turkish nationals and 300 Iraqi detainees. Iraqi diplomatic efforts are ongoing to negotiate the repatriation of detained citizens, working within legal frameworks.

The issue was discussed in a session of the House of Representatives, attended by key officials including National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji and representatives from the Ministry of Interior and Joint Operations.
