Amman: The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) has mandated investigative courts to implement stricter legal measures against individuals found violating the electricity network. This directive was issued during the council’s sixth session, chaired by the head of the Federal Court of Cassation, Judge Faiq Zidan, as reported by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

According to Iraqi News Agency, the session paid homage to the late Judge Hijab Ibrahim Ahmed, a member of the Federal Court of Cassation, and retired Judge Baraq Ibrahim Wasfi, both of whom had recently passed away. The council also announced the promotion of several judges and approved new assignments within various appellate court presidencies to meet public interest requirements.

In addition, the council reviewed a letter from the Ministry of Electricity addressing encroachments on the power grid. It instructed investigative courts to enforce stringent legal actions, noting that tampering with the electricity network is classified as theft of public property under Article 444/11 of the Penal Code. Furthermore, it emphasized that assaults on Ministry of Electricity teams involved in removing such violations are criminal offences under Articles 229 and 230 of the Penal Code. The council urged the prosecution of offenders to curb these acts effectively.
