Baghdad: The European Union (EU) affirmed on Saturday that combating corruption is a priority for the Iraqi government, while reiterating the EU’s readiness to support Iraq’s efforts in recovering funds and assets and strengthening the rule of law, and praising the judiciary and government’s efforts in combating corruption.

According to Iraqi News Agency, EU Ambassador to Iraq Klemens Semtner delivered a speech during the launch of the trial follow-up program report, acknowledging the efforts of the United Nations Development Programme for its commitment to enhancing governance and protecting public resources in Iraq. Semtner highlighted the alignment between the EU and Iraq in combating corruption, stating that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has prioritized this issue. He emphasized the EU’s support through its partnership with the United Nations Development Programme under the project “Anti-Corruption Initiatives and Arbitration for Environmental Justice,” aiming to foster investment and economic growth.

Semtner outlined that the efforts extend beyond monitoring trials to include legislative development, commercial dispute resolution, environmental justice promotion, and broader governance dialogue. He underscored the importance of credible institutions applying laws consistently to serve public interest. Good governance and rule of law are vital for building citizens’ trust and achieving sustainable development.

He stressed that justice in corruption cases extends beyond convictions to recovering public resources. The report advocates for a comprehensive approach, from identifying financial damages to securing assets and implementing reparations, including cross-border when necessary. Semtner noted Iraq’s legal tools and institutional framework for these efforts and emphasized the importance of consistent application and coordination among relevant institutions.

The report offers recommendations to enhance asset recovery, such as improving institutional coordination, linking criminal and civil proceedings, enhancing asset preservation, and expanding legal tools. Semtner confirmed the EU’s readiness to support Iraq by building legal capacities, developing management systems, enhancing coordination, and supporting international cooperation.

Semtner commended the Supreme Judicial Council, the Iraqi government, and national institutions for their leadership and cooperation in advancing anti-corruption efforts.
