Baghdad: Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi announced that his upcoming visit to Washington is set to mark the beginning of a new era in Iraq-United States relations, with a focus on economic, investment, and development partnerships. This visit aims to transition the relationship from a military partnership to a sustainable economic alliance, emphasizing the importance of mutual interests and respect.
According to Iraqi News Agency, Prime Minister al-Zaidi emphasized the conclusion of the International Coalition forces’ combat mission against ISIS in September, which signifies a shift in focus towards economic collaboration with the United States. The prime minister highlighted Iraq’s ambition to ramp up oil production to seven million barrels per day and underscored the importance of collaborating with reputable American companies in sectors such as energy, communications, and technology. The government has already initiated discussions with major international firms like Chevron, Halliburton, and HKN Energy, alongside exploring strategic cooperation with Starlink to enhance Iraq’s digital infrastructure.
Prime Minister al-Zaidi also revealed plans for an Energy and Development Fund, initially processing 500,000 barrels per day with potential growth to two million barrels per day. The fund aims to direct resources towards agreements with American companies for electricity and infrastructure projects, potentially unlocking $400 billion over three decades. This initiative seeks to rebuild Iraq’s war-damaged infrastructure by investing in development projects.
The statement further elaborated on Iraq’s historical struggles, including the prolonged phase of resource attrition since 1980, the impact of wars, and the economic decline during the sanctions period in the 1990s. Iraq’s recent history includes confronting ISIS and the subsequent damage to infrastructure and economic losses. The prime minister reiterated the importance of strategic partnerships with the United States and Gulf states, emphasizing Iraq’s commitment to a policy of balance and openness.
Al-Zaidi stressed the necessity of decisive leadership, asserting the importance of integrating armed factions within state institutions. He called for preserving Iraq’s legacy and sacrifices, with plans to host an international “Sovereignty Conference” to affirm Iraq’s autonomy. Iraq aims to restore its oil export capacity and enhance production levels, while maintaining positive relations with neighboring countries like Iran.
The prime minister assured that Iraq’s decisions will prioritize the interests of its citizens, rejecting external dictates. The government’s efforts include a Development Fund for economic growth and job creation, confronting corruption, and enhancing transparency and financial governance. Al-Zaidi concluded by affirming Iraq’s commitment to transitioning towards a modern economy and addressing corruption through comprehensive reforms. The government plans to present a record of achievements to citizens after September 30, as they continue to build a productive and advanced economy.
