Baghdad: The Iraqi Football Association has announced a series of significant reforms, including the formation of a three-member committee tasked with renewing the contract of Australian coach Graham Arnold. This committee will be led by Younis Mahmoud, alongside Sarmad Abdul-Ilah and Mohammed Nasser, the director of the national teams department.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the restructuring efforts also involve the dismissal of the youth national team's coaching staff, previously headed by Spaniard Jose Maria Zarco, due to his lack of a coaching certificate and work permit. This decision was made during the association's executive office meeting held Thursday evening in Baghdad.
In addition to these changes, the Iraqi Football Association has planned a general government sports and media conference for mid-August. This event aims to outline the schedules for all leagues and national team activities, providing clarity and direction for the upcoming sports season.
The association has also confirmed Basra as the host city for the West Asian Youth Championship, although another city might host matches for one of the groups. Additionally, the association has decided to withdraw from the West Asian Championship for national teams, which was scheduled for November.
A comprehensive restructuring of the national team's working committees and supporting staff is also underway. The association intends to dissolve all current administrative, media, and medical staff, with plans to rename and restructure these positions based on evaluations from the newly appointed committee.
Finally, the Iraqi Football Association has announced that the Iraqi Stars League will commence on August 14th, with the draw for the league matches set to take place at the end of July.
