Basra: Following the detention of five Iraqi fishermen in Kuwait, human rights organizations are demanding immediate actions to ensure the safety of Iraqi fishermen in territorial waters.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the High Commission for Human Rights has urged government authorities to implement measures to protect these fishermen and equip their boats with modern GPS devices. The Commission expressed deep concern over an incident that led to the death of Iraqi fisherman Mohammed Adel Shayea and injured his colleagues due to gunfire in territorial waters.
The Commission conveyed its condolences to Shayea's family and wished the injured a quick recovery. It highlighted that the protection of life and personal safety are non-negotiable under international laws. The Commission has called for a transparent investigation to uncover the incident's circumstances and ensure the victims' rights are upheld. Monitoring teams from the Basra office are documenting the incident and preparing a report on the challenges facing Iraqi fishermen.
The Commission has appealed for calm and encouraged diplomatic resolutions to preserve good neighborly relations and avoid escalation that might harm stability or bilateral ties. It also advised Iraqi fishermen to be cautious, adhere to territorial boundaries, and comply with naval and border instructions.
Furthermore, the Commission urged the Ministry of Transport and relevant agencies to support fishermen by providing GPS-equipped boats for safer maritime navigation. Last week, the Kuwaiti coast guard detained five Iraqi fishermen, leading to injuries and the death of one. The Kuwaiti authorities have since agreed to release the detained fishermen, with four returning to Basra injured, one requiring surgery, and the deceased's body repatriated.
