Monaco: Kenyan runner Emmanuel Wanyoniyi, the Olympic and world champion in the 800 meters, broke the world record in the 1000 meters, clocking a time of 2 minutes and 11.83 seconds at the Monaco Diamond League meet. The 21-year-old Wanyoniyi thus surpassed his compatriot Noah Ngeny, the previous record holder of 2 minutes and 11.96 seconds, a record that had stood for 27 years since September 1999, by 0.13 seconds.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Kenyan runner dominated the race in the final meters, seizing the lead with 200 meters to go, ahead of Britain's Jake Whitman, before increasing his pace in the last 100 meters to cross the finish line and set a new world record. Whitman finished second behind Wanyoniyi, while Algeria's Djamel Sejjati came in third.
The 1000-meter race is a rare event in athletics, as it is not included in the Olympic program or the World Championships. However, it receives special attention for measuring the abilities of middle-distance runners.
