Southern Electricity Transmission Company Discusses Progress of Gulf Electrical Interconnection Project with Indian Partner

Basra: Southern Electricity Transmission Company is currently in discussions with an Indian firm regarding the stages of completing the Gulf electrical interconnection project. The Director General of the General Company for Electricity Transmission in the Southern Region, Engineer Ali Zuhair Karim, engaged in talks with the staff of the Indian company responsible for implementing the Gulf electricity interconnection project (Faw 400 - Wafra 400) 400 kV, to review the project's progress and address any obstacles hindering the work.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the company's media office released a statement detailing the Director General's meeting with both the company's staff and the follow-up team. During the meeting, the Director General was briefed on the project's status and the main challenges faced during implementation. He emphasized the importance of developing immediate and effective solutions to technical and logistical issues to ensure uninterrupted work progress.

The statement further highlighted that the strategic project, executed by the Indian company Kalpataru, boasts a transmission capacity of up to 3800 MVA and spans a total length of 290 km. The project includes the installation and wiring of 848 towers to connect to the national grid, thereby enhancing the stability of the electrical system in the southern region.

Significant progress has been made on the Iraqi side of the project, with 217 towers erected and 74 km of the 77 km line laid, extending from the Iraqi-Kuwaiti border in the Safwan district to the Al-Faw substation. Current efforts focus on overcoming wind challenges and erecting the crossing towers in the Shatt al-Basra area, reaching a height of 186 meters. On the Kuwaiti side, the line is 213 km long with 627 towers, with only 8 towers remaining to be completed.
