Wasit Launches Major Campaign to Eradicate Water Hyacinth

Wasit: A large-scale campaign to remove and combat the invasive water hyacinth plant has been launched in Wasit Governorate. This initiative is part of a broader national effort that also includes the governorates of Baghdad, Babylon, Diwaniyah, and Wasit. According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Deputy Governor of Wasit for Technical Affairs, Adnan al-Zubaidi, stated that the campaign employs excavators and amphibious vehicles to remove the water hyacinth from critical areas such as the Kut Dam upstream and the headwaters of tributary irrigation canals. Additionally, three barriers have been erected in al-Suwaira, al-Nu'maniyah, and Kut to limit the spread of the plant. Nabil al-Shammari, head of the governorate's service efforts, confirmed that working teams are removing approximately 150 tons of water hyacinth daily from the Kut Dam upstream. This effort involves the use of 35 dump trucks, 7 bulldozers, 4 amphibious excavators, and 14 dredgers. He further noted that the campaign will persist until th e water hyacinth is entirely eradicated, as the plant poses significant threats to the waterways and irrigation systems in the region.
