Baghdad: The Ministry of Transport is actively developing alternative air corridors to facilitate the smooth flow of transit flights across its airspace. This strategic move aims to transform Iraqi airspace into a preferred and vital corridor for international airlines by offering direct and safe routes that save time and costs.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Ahmed Imad Ahmed, Assistant Director General of the General Company for Air Navigation Services, noted the necessity of these developments due to recent regional tensions that led to the closure of several airspaces in the Middle East, including Iraq's, from June 28th. The Civil Aviation Authority reopened Iraqi airspace on July 8th for arriving, departing, and transiting aircraft.
Ahmed confirmed that air traffic within Iraqi airspace is now operating smoothly, with management and monitoring processes adhering to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. He elaborated on the Ministry's efforts in establishing alternative routes with neighboring countries, especially due to the ongoing closure of Kuwaiti airspace to overflights. Successful new routes include direct connections between Saudi Arabia and Syria through Iraqi airspace, which have significantly contributed to the gradual resumption of overflights.
The Deputy Minister highlighted Iraq's renewed role as a central hub linking East and West. The General Company for Air Navigation Services is committed to upgrading its infrastructure and enhancing the skills of its national staff to align with global advancements in civil aviation.
