Baghdad: Two unprecedented heat waves that swept across Britain in May and June have resulted in the deaths of approximately 2,887 individuals.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, these fatalities illustrate the severe impact that the extreme weather events have had on public health, especially as they occurred so early in the summer season.

The British Health Security Agency highlighted that the number of deaths linked to the May and June heat waves is nearly double the total heat-related fatalities recorded for the entire summer of 2025. This alarming statistic underscores the growing threat that such extreme weather events pose, particularly in terms of public health.

British Health Minister Yvette Cooper, addressing the situation, remarked: "We have been accustomed for many years to the strain on the National Health Service during the winter months, but we are now seeing that the impact of summer heat waves is becoming even more serious for the health of thousands of people." She stressed that the increasing summer temperatures represent a burgeoning health challenge, compounding the traditional pressures faced by the health system during winter.
