Algiers: The Algerian Football Federation has announced the termination of its contract with national team coach Vladimir Petkovic. This development comes despite the recent extension of his contract ahead of the 2026 World Cup. According to National Iraqi News Agency, the federation disclosed the decision through a press release, stating that the contractual relationship with Petkovic and his technical staff has been officially ended by mutual agreement. The statement expressed gratitude towards Petkovic and his staff for their professionalism and dedication over their twenty-nine-month tenure with the national team. Petkovic, a 62-year-old Bosnian, took charge of the Algerian national team in February 2024, succeeding Djamel Belmadi. His contract was initially extended until 2028 before the World Cup finals in North America. Under his leadership, Algeria qualified for the Round of 32 in the tournament, which expanded to 48 teams for the first time. Despite this achievement, the team exited after a 0-2 def eat to Switzerland. During his time as head coach, Petkovic led Algeria in 33 matches, securing 23 victories, five losses, and five draws. His previous coaching experience includes leading the Swiss national team and managing clubs such as Lazio in Italy and Bordeaux in France.
