Athens: Greek firefighters continued their battle on Tuesday against the blaze that has been raging since Friday northwest of Athens, striving to bring it under control.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, "We have been on the ground for the fifth consecutive day fighting this very difficult fire," said Yannis Artopios, spokesman for the fire brigade. "Today, around 30 aircraft will be deployed to combat the fires in the mountains overlooking this part of the Gulf of Corinth, about 50 kilometers northwest of the capital."

He added, "It's a vast area, and a new fire could break out at any moment. We want to control the situation."

Hotspots remain in large areas affected by the fire, requiring constant monitoring, as a strong gust of wind could be enough to ignite new blazes.

Thanks to a decrease in wind intensity on Monday, firefighting aircraft were able to resume operations and help regain control of the situation.

Several European countries, including France, Spain, Germany, Turkey, and Italy, are experiencing widespread forest fires, amid warnings that they will intensify due to rising temperatures and climate change.
