Baghdad: The Legal Committee in the Iraqi Parliament has confirmed an initiative to amend articles in the Retirement Law, including a proposal to restore the legal retirement age to 63 years.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, committee member Ibtisam Hashim al-Hilali stated, “Parliament has begun a move to amend the Unified Retirement Law in response to the demands of retirees and to improve the articles that regulate their rights.” Al-Hilali highlighted that signatures were collected recently from members of Parliament to submit a formal request to the Speaker of Parliament, aiming to amend the Unified Retirement Law.

Al-Hilali explained that the initiative is focused on reviewing several articles of the law to better serve retirees. A significant proposal under consideration is amending the legal retirement age to 63 instead of 60, as it was previously. This change is part of a broader review of the Retirement Law by members of the Legal Committee and Parliament.

She emphasized the need to consider the circumstances and needs of retirees in the amendment process, ensuring that the changes are fair to this segment of society. Al-Hilali noted that the House of Representatives is committed to studying the articles that require amendment and will work on submitting them in a way that serves the interests of retirees and preserves their rights.
