Baghdad: The head of the Federal Integrity Commission, Mohammed Ali al-Lami, confirmed on Thursday that understandings have been reached with Turkey to expedite the implementation of Iraqi court rulings and the extradition of wanted individuals and the recovery of proceeds from corruption.

According to Iraqi News Agency, al-Lami stated that Iraq and Turkey are moving towards translating the high-level political will between the two countries into decisive procedural steps in the areas of justice and the recovery of funds and assets. He emphasized that cooperation between the two countries represents a practical path for pursuing perpetrators of corruption and recovering the Iraqi people’s money.

During his visit to the Republic of Turkey, al-Lami met with Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz and officials from the Ministry of Justice. He noted that the visit to Ankara is a continuation and culmination of the strategic understandings established by Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi and his accompanying delegation during their visit. This reflects the high level of coordination with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He explained that the commission is working to translate these understandings into practical and decisive measures in cases related to justice and the recovery of funds and assets.

Al-Lami praised the Turkish president’s directives to expedite the implementation of the joint understandings, emphasizing that there is no safe haven for looted funds or those wanted for justice, given the sincere will of both countries. The pursuit of corrupt individuals and the recovery of funds obtained through corruption crimes should not be confined to national borders.
