Basra: Journalists in Basra have taken a firm stand on the dignity and freedom of the press, declaring these as non-negotiable rights and demanding accountability for any violations. This declaration was made during a significant meeting organized by the Basra branch of the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate, where concerns were raised about the obstacles faced by journalists while covering the activities of the Minister of Oil and the Governor of Basra at an oil field inauguration.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting at the syndicate’s branch involved in-depth discussions on the challenges journalists encounter during official events. These challenges include confiscation of press credentials and equipment, as well as restrictions on their professional duties. The journalists expressed that such actions are inconsistent with their status and the media’s mission.

Veteran journalist Abbas Al-Zarkani read a statement from the Journalists Syndicate, condemning the treatment of journalists and affirming their essential role in conveying truth to the public. The statement highlighted that journalists should not be treated as secondary guests at government events and emphasized their right to operate freely and with dignity.

Sadiq Al-Ali, head of the Syndicate branch, emphasized the collective rejection of any abuse against journalists. He called for a thorough investigation into the incidents and accountability for those responsible for any misconduct. Al-Ali reiterated that the profession’s dignity and mission are paramount and should never be compromised.

The journalists proposed clear mechanisms for coordination with government officials to ensure respect for the press and prevent favoritism or exclusion of media outlets. They noted the active role of the syndicate in addressing previous incidents of ID and badge confiscation, stressing the need for such practices to cease.

The meeting concluded with several recommendations, including engaging with media officials in government departments to establish frameworks that facilitate journalist operations. The journalists also suggested providing lists of accredited media personnel to help organize coverage.

In their final remarks, Basra journalists underscored that defending press freedom and the dignity of journalists is crucial for upholding the public’s right to information and maintaining the integrity of the profession.
