Baghdad: PM Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi affirmed that the coming year, 2027, will be the year of doubling electricity generation and doubling transmission and distribution capacity, marking a significant step toward transforming Iraq’s electricity sector.

According to Iraqi News Agency, the Prime Minister reassured the Iraqi people that the government is moving forward with measures to end delays in the electricity sector and put an end to the waste and corruption that have persisted for decades. This statement was released by the PM Media Office. The Prime Minister made these remarks during a visit to the Ministry of Electricity’s headquarters, as part of his active follow-up on the performance of state service institutions.

During his visit, Al-Zaidi chaired an expanded meeting with the Ministry’s senior officials and staff. He emphasized the need to intensify efforts, combat corruption, and submit an urgent study on supplying the various types of existing power plants with their required fuel. This approach aims to ensure a noticeable improvement in electricity supply during the coming summer.

Al-Zaidi directed the Minister of Electricity to undertake comprehensive maintenance of the existing 30,000 MW of generation capacity. Additionally, he instructed the purchase of no less than 10,000 MW of electricity from neighboring countries. The plan also includes acquiring 37,000 MW of generation capacity, comprising 15,000 MW from GE, 12,000 MW from solar power, and 10,000 MW from thermal power.
