Iraq Seeks Clarification from Iran on Attack Targeting Kurdistan PM’s Residence

Baghdad: Iraq has formally requested Iran to clarify its position on the recent attack targeting the residence of Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani in Erbil.

According to Iraqi News Agency, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein engaged in a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, seeking clarity on the issue. The discussion centered around an incident involving Hadid-110 drones, which targeted both the residence and personal office of PM Barzani, as stated by the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Hussein highlighted that past attacks were justified by the Iranian government due to the presence of Iranian opposition parties or factions in the region. However, he noted that this attack directly targeting the Prime Minister’s residence marks a dangerous precedent, potentially escalating tensions and threatening regional stability. The Iraqi Foreign Minister condemned the action as “unjustified targeting” and emphasized the need for an official Iranian stance on the matter.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed surprise over the attack, asserting that he had no information suggesting the attacks originated from Iranian territory. He emphasized the lack of justification for such actions, highlighting the positive and strong relations between the Iranian government and the Kurdistan Regional Government, particularly with the two main political parties in the region.

Fuad Hussein urged the Iranian authorities to issue an official statement clarifying Iran’s position on the attack and identifying the parties or reasons behind it. In response, Araghchi confirmed Iran’s rejection of actions that could escalate tensions and destabilize the region, promising to release an official statement detailing the Iranian government’s perspective on the incident.
