Integrity Commission Arrests Anbar Municipality Officials Over Fictitious Project

Ramadi: The Integrity Commission has taken decisive action by arresting the head and members of two committees within the Anbar Municipality. These arrests are linked to allegations of disbursing and receiving funds for a non-existent project, raising significant concerns about corruption within the municipal department.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Federal Integrity Commission reported the detention of six individuals, among them an official from a municipal department in Anbar Governorate. The arrests were made on charges of illegally handling funds. A team from the Anbar Investigation Office was instrumental in uncovering the fraudulent activities during their visit to a municipal department in the region.

The Commission’s statement elaborated that the apprehended employees include the assistant director and members of both the implementation and acceptance committees. These individuals are accused of processing an advance payment for a fictitious project purportedly aimed at the rehabilitation and maintenance of roads in the Saqlawiyah district. This revelation underscores a significant breach of trust and the manipulation of public funds for personal gain.

Furthermore, the statement highlighted that the investigating judge, who specializes in integrity cases and is based in Ramadi, has ordered the detention of the accused. The legal proceedings are being conducted under Article 340 of the Penal Code, which addresses offenses related to corruption and misuse of power. This development marks a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to combat corruption and restore integrity within governmental operations.
