Rehabilitation Project Launched for Ancient City of Hatra


Mosul: The General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage has announced the commencement of the first phase of a collaborative project aimed at rehabilitating the ancient city of Hatra. This project involves cooperation with the Italian company ISMIO and the local government, marking a significant step towards promoting archaeological tourism and safeguarding the historical sites in the Hatra district. The announcement was made in the presence of Nineveh’s Governor, Abdul Qadir Al-Dakhil, and the Inspector of Antiquities and Heritage of Nineveh, Ruwaid Muwaffaq, alongside other officials and stakeholders.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, the General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage has initiated the collaboration with ISMIO to begin removing rubble from the site, signifying the start of the project’s first phase. The project aims to fully rehabilitate the city, with future plans already in motion. The Authority has confirmed its collaboration with UNESCO and the ALIPH organization to fund the project’s second phase. This phase will involve preparing comprehensive studies, designs, and bills of quantities essential for the project’s progression.



The project holds significant importance in preserving Hatra’s cultural and architectural heritage. Its rehabilitation is expected to boost the city’s tourist appeal and cultural significance, effectively showcasing its historical legacy. The efforts underscore the commitment to protecting and enhancing one of the region’s most renowned archaeological sites.
