Baghdad: A delegation from the Heritage Preservation Center visited the Institute of Musical Studies to discuss the inclusion of the santur instrument on the World Heritage List. This meeting brought together several professors from the institute and specialists in music and heritage to explore opportunities for joint cooperation in preserving and documenting Iraqi musical heritage.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Director of the Institute of Musical Studies, Maestro Ali Hassan, welcomed the delegation and underscored the significance of strengthening coordination and cooperation between institutions dedicated to heritage and culture. He emphasized that such collaboration would play a crucial role in protecting Iraqi musical heritage, safeguarding traditional musical instruments, and documenting them through specialized scientific methodologies.

During the meeting, discussions centered around the santur, regarded as an authentic musical instrument integral to Iraqi musical heritage. The participants deliberated on mechanisms to prepare a comprehensive file to support efforts to include the santur on the World Heritage List. This initiative aims to enhance the instrument’s cultural and historical presence and affirm its significance within the elements of Iraqi musical heritage.

Specialists at the meeting exchanged views and experiences on various aspects, including the history of the santur, its technical characteristics, development stages, and its role in performing the Iraqi maqam. They also considered developing joint mechanisms to preserve the instrument and ensure the transmission of knowledge and playing skills to future generations.

Both parties stressed the importance of sustained coordination, collaborative efforts, and unified scientific and documentary initiatives to support the santur and promote Iraqi musical heritage in international cultural and heritage forums.
