Lieutenant General Abdul Amir al-Shammari Chairs Meeting to Combat Rumors and Misinformation


Baghdad: Lieutenant General Abdul Amir al-Shammari, Director of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, chaired the periodic meeting of the Strategic Psychological Cell for Combating Rumors and Misinformation at the headquarters of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief. The meeting was attended by Lieutenant General Dr. Saad Maan, Head of the Security Media Cell; the Spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces; the Director of Media and Moral Guidance at the Ministry of Defense; the Head of the Strategic Psychological Cell for Combating Rumors; the Director of the Information Operations Center; and various security and military media officials from numerous ministries, institutions, and government departments.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting addressed topics related to strengthening national media efforts and countering rumors and misleading news targeting the security and stability of society. Discussions focused on mechanisms for monitoring, tracking, and responding quickly to inaccurate information to mitigate its impact and enhance public awareness.



The Director of the Commander-in-Chief’s Office emphasized the importance of enhancing coordination and cooperation among media, security, and military institutions, and unifying efforts in addressing rumors and misinformation. He stressed the necessity of relying on accurate and reliable information and its swift dissemination to the public, particularly in matters affecting national security and social peace.



Al-Shammari also emphasized the importance of developing media monitoring and analysis tools, utilizing modern technologies and social media platforms to track circulating content and counter false information using professional and well-considered methods. He further stressed the need to strengthen direct communication with citizens and instill a culture of verifying news before sharing it.



The Head of the Security Media Cell affirmed that confronting rumors and misinformation is a shared responsibility requiring continuous integration among relevant institutions. He explained that the Security Media Cell continues its efforts in monitoring and analyzing what is published in various media outlets and social media platforms, and addressing misinformation through official statements and clarifications based on facts and credible sources.



The meeting witnessed the presentation of several visions and proposals aimed at developing work and strengthening mechanisms for information exchange and coordination among relevant parties.
