Baghdad: The Ministry of Electricity announced on Monday the suspension of the interconnection with Kuwait due to regional events. “Imported energy includes 600 megawatts via the interconnection with Turkey, 50 megawatts via the Jordanian line, in addition to 600 megawatts from regional interconnection routes, and 1400 megawatts from investment power plants in the Kurdistan Region,” said Ministry spokesman Ahmed Turki Jiyad to the Iraqi News Agency – INA.

According to Iraqi News Agency, Jiyad further explained, “The electrical interconnection with Kuwait is 96 percent complete, but work has stopped on the Kuwaiti side due to the events unfolding in the region,” expressing his hope that “work will resume after the crisis ends.” Meanwhile, talks regarding the electrical interconnection with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have shown significant progress.

Additionally, the Minister of Electricity, Ali Saadi Wahib, engaged in discussions with the World Bank last week on several priorities, including the regional interconnection project with Saudi Arabia. “Awaiting the visit of the Prime Minister, Ali Falih al-Zaidi, to Riyadh, during which this file will be discussed,” Turki stated, highlighting the ongoing diplomatic efforts to bolster Iraq’s energy supply through regional cooperation.
