Baghdad: The Child Welfare Authority has underscored the necessity of enhancing the legal protection system for children and juveniles, with a focus on reinforcing their rights and care.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Authority participated in an extensive meeting held by the Parliamentary Committee on Labor and Civil Society Organizations. The meeting, chaired by Nahla al-Fahdawi, the oldest member of parliament, was attended by several committee members.

The gathering addressed the draft Juvenile Welfare Law, which forms part of the government program and has progressed to its first reading in parliament. Representatives from relevant bodies, including law experts from the Ministries of Justice and Interior, the Human Rights Commission, and UNICEF, were present to discuss technical and legal observations on the draft law. The aim was to explore potential improvements to enhance the protection and care of juveniles.

Key topics of discussion included the strengthening of preventative measures, early detection of juveniles at risk of delinquency, and the development of care and rehabilitation mechanisms. The meeting also covered the role of observation and reform institutions, the activation of aftercare programs, and the reintegration of juveniles into society. The Child Welfare Authority highlighted the importance of continued collaboration and coordination in legislation and laws relating to childhood. This effort aims to contribute to the development of the legal protection system for children and juveniles, ensuring a legislative environment that meets their needs and considers their best interests.
